Plank boards are kiln dried to reduce moisture.
Our planks are certified to the Southern Pine Inspection Bureau grade DI 65 by graders that have 30-40 yrs of experience. This grading system helps make sure the board is safe to stand upon. Ring growth has to be tight, with a minimum rings/inch standard. Knots can only be a certain size. Plank boards are averaged for overall size and no large splits or cracks, and no dead spots are allowed.
To avoid splitting, cracking and warping, each end of each board gets a rod and clip treatment. This process includes drilling a hole approximately 8 mm in size all the way through the board on each end. Then an 8 mm steel rod is inserted into the hole, reinforcing it against warping, cracking and splitting. The clip process involves cutting about a 2 inch length triangular corner from all 4 corners of the board. Effectively, this provides a more rounded corner. The corner being at an angle helps let the board glance off impact if it is dropped, avoiding splits that render it useless or force it to be cut to a shorter length. Each side displays a stamp showing OSHA DI 65 so it can be easily seen.
